 The University of Newcastle, formerly known as Newcastle Polytechnic, was established in 1969 by merging three regional colleges: Rutherford College of Technology, the College of Art and Industrial Design, and the Municipal College of Commerce. As early as the eighteenth century, the local industry's practical and vocational training needs prompted the establishment of suitable post-secondary education. Building on these solid roots, the Polytechnic grew to become one of the UK's top institutions of its kind. With the formation of the City College of Education in 1974 and then the Northern Counties College of Education in 1976, it became a key center for initial teacher preparation.

 The Polytechnic, which already provided nurse training, began offering occupational therapy and physiotherapy courses in 1976. The University was established in September 1992, when the Polytechnic was granted university status and renamed Northumbria University. The Bede, Newcastle, and Northumbria Colleges of Health Studies were merged into the University in 1995. Northumbria's international reputation as a top modern university stems from a unique blend of high-quality and narrowly focused programs. By the year 2000, Northumbria University was the largest university in the North East of England. It had a diverse degree portfolio and a student population with a rich cultural mix. Northumbria University has a student population of approximately 30,000, with about 3,000 international students on campus.

 In recent years, the university has consolidated its position on two primary campuses in Newcastle upon Tyne. These are in the city center and the other on the city's outskirts at Coach Lane. Clear academic achievement and financial growth have enabled the University to make considerable investments in its estate. This includes relocating the City Campus to a new site and constructing two magnificent campus buildings. The University has plans to expand its City Campus, improve teaching facilities, and build a state-of-the-art sports center for the benefit of employees, students, and the general public. Northumbria University, one of the UK's most highly regarded modern universities, has been formally designated as "outstanding" for teaching.
